Indices mean powers or raised terms. The index figure above a term (number or letter) tells us how many times that term is multiplied by itself.

Rule 1
1) When multiplying powers of the same base, we add the indices.
an × am = am+n
Examples:
(i) x4 × x5 = x4+5 = x9
(ii) 43 × 42 = 43+2 = 45
