Indices mean powers or raised terms. The index figure above a term (number or letter) tells us how many times that term is multiplied by itself.

Positive, Negative and Zero Indices
Positive indices have positive powers, example y4
Negative Indices have negative powers, example x-3
A negative power indicates the reciprocal of the term
Example x^(-3)=1/x^3
Zero indices have zero powers. Example x0
Any term with a zero index equals 1.
Example: x^0=1,(1/2)^0=1
