The term inverse variation means the same as inverse proportion. There is inverse variation between two variables when one variable is directly proportional to the reciprocal of the other. That is, the product of the two variables is constant. So, as one variable increases the other decreases. There are several ways of expressing an inverse relationship between two variables.
x varies inversely as y
x is inversely proportional to y
We write x ∝1/y for both statements and proceed using the method outlined in the previous section.
