Lesson 5 – Value And Place Value Of Digits In A Number.

Objective:

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to know and find the value and place value of digits in a given number.
Place value describes the position of a digit in a given number and the value it has. The value of a digit changes when the place or position of the digit changes. Every digit in a number has a value.
Under this topic we will be using the place value chart or table to tell the value and position of a given digit.

Example 1.
Use a place value chart or table to tell the value and place value of 15933

Solution

From the chart above,
The place value of 1 is ten thousands.
The value of 1 is 10000 or ten thousand.
The place value of 5 is thousands.
The value of 5 is 5000 or five thousand.
The place value of 9 is hundreds.
The value of 9 is 900 or nine hundred.
The place value of 3 is tens.
The value of 3 is 30 or thirty.
The place value of the next 3 is ones or units.
The value of the 3 is 3.
From the table, it can be observed that the place value describes the position of the digit and the value tells us how much the digit is worth.
