  • Find the value of a digit in a given number

  • Find the place value of a digit in a given number

What is the meaning of place value?

Place value in mathematics simply means that the place or position of a digit in a number determines its value.
Example 1:

Find the value and place value of all the digits in 3274.

The value of the 3 is 3000.

The place value of the 3 is thousand.

The value of the 2 is 200.

The place value of the 2 is hundred.

The value of the 7 is 70.

The place value of the 7 is tens.

The value of the 4 is 4 units or 4 ones.

The place value of the 4 is units or ones.

Example 2:

Find the value and place value of all the digits in 7432.

Example 3:

Find the value and place value of the 3 in the following numbers.

  1. 263

  2. 938

  3. 3462

Solution

1)  263

The place value of the 3 in 263 is Ones and the value of the 3 in 263 is 3.

2) 938

The place value of the 3 in 938 is tens and the value of the 3 in 938 is 3 tens or 30.

3) 3462

The place value of the 3 in 3462 is thousands and the value of the 3 in 3462 is 3 thousands or 3000.
