Objective

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to expand decimals into simpler fractions.

Decimals are made up of simpler fractions that add up to form the decimal. They can therefore be expanded by breaking them down into smaller fractions.

This decimal has 0 whole number, 2 tenths, 8 hundredths and 7 thousandths. When we add up these smaller fractions together, they make  which is equivalent to the decimal 0.287.
