Lesson 4 – Writing Mixed Fractions as Improper Fractions

Objectives:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to write mixed fractions (mixed numbers) as improper fractions.

Mixed fractions or mixed numbers are made up of a whole number and a proper fraction.

   Example 1

The figure above shows one unit and half of one unit. Which isone
whole and a half (1 1/2)

There are 3 halves in (1 1/2)  . We write it like this:

Example 2

here are 4 thirds in (1  1/3)

To change a mixed fraction into an improper one, multiply the whole number by the denominator and then add the numerator to your result. Whole number (1) x denominator (3) = 1 x 3 = 3

Result (3) + numerator (1) = 3 + 1 = 4

Divide by the denominator (3) to get 4/3
