Lesson 4 – Word Problems (Addition and Subtraction)

Objective:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to solve word problems involving addition and subtraction.

Example 1

There are 300 students in a school. 103 students are girls. The rest are boys. How many students are boys?

Solution

The total number of students = 300

Number of girls = 103

Number of boys = 300 – 103 = 197

=>  197 students are boys.

Example 2

There are 416 bibles in a church. Some are blue and some are white. If 308 of the bibles are white, how many are blue?

Solution

Total Number of bibles = 416

Number of white bibles = 308

Number of blue bibles = 416 – 308 = 108

=>   There are 108 blue bibles.

 

Example 3

I have 168 stamps. My friend gave me 141 stamps. How many stamps do I have altogether?

Solution

Number of stamps = 168

Number of stamps my friend gave me =141

Number of stamps altogether = 168 + 141 = 309

=>   There are 309 stamps altogether.
