Lesson 3 – Subtraction with trading (borrowing)

Objective:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to subtract by borrowing or trading.

Example

From this example what we do is called borrowing. We cannot subtract or take away 8 from 3 => 3 – 8, so we borrow a 10 from the tens column. We then add this ten to the 3 units giving us 13.

We then go ahead and subtract 8 from 13 => 13 – 8 = 5
