Lesson 3 – Dividing Whole Numbers By 10

Objective:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to divide whole numbers by 10.
When dividing whole numbers by multiples of 10, the number becomes 10 times smaller. If the number ends with a zero, simply cancel the zero.

Example 1:       6740 ÷ 10 = 674

Example 2:        95200 ÷ 10 = 9520

Example 3:       537 ÷ 10 = 53.7

When dividing a whole number that does not end with a zero by 10 a decimal point is introduced before the last digit in the answer. 53.7 is 10 times smaller than 537.

NOTE: Every whole number has an invisible decimal point at the end of the last digit. Therefore the answer becomes 53.7
