Lesson 2 – Subtraction

Objective:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to find the differences of numbers.

Subtraction simply means to take away. Subtraction is done using the minus sign (-). The answer we get after subtraction is the DIFFERENCE.

Example 1

Subtract 24 from 95. This means take away 24 from 95. We write it this way 95 24

Start from your right hand side as usual. 5 units take away 4 units is 1 unit. Write 1 in the units column. 9 Tens take away 2 Tens is 7 Tens. Write 7 in the Tens column. Your answer becomes 71.

Example 2
984 + 159

4 units take away 9 units is not possible so we borrow 1 Ten from 8 Tens and 8 Tens become 7 Tens. We add 1 Ten to 4 units and we get 14 units. 14 units take away 9 units is 5 units. We write 5 in the units column.

7 Tens take away 5 Tens is 2 Tens. We write 2 in the Tens column. Then 9 Hundreds take away 1 Hundred is 8 Hundreds. We write 8 in the Hundred column. The answer is 825.

Example 3
981 – 485

1 unit take away 5 units is not possible so we borrow from 8 Tens. 8 Tens become 7 Tens. We add 1 Ten to 1 Unit to get 11 units. 11 units take 5 units is 6 units. 7 Tens take away 8 Tens is not possible, we borrow 1 Hundred from 9 Hundreds and we add to 7 Tens to get 1 Hundred and 7 Tens that is 17 Tens. 17 Tens take away 8 Tens is 9 Tens. We write 9 in Tens columns. 9 Hundreds becomes 8 Hundreds. 8 Hundreds take away 4 Hundreds is 4 Hundreds. The answer becomes 496.
