Lesson 2 – Place Value

Objectives:

 At the end of the lesson, students should be able to;

  • Know the meaning of place value.
  • Know the value of digits in a given number.
  • Know the place value of digits in a given number.
  • Know the difference between the value and place value of a given digit in a number.

Place value in mathematics simply means the place or position of a digit in a number. The place or position of a digit in a number determines its value. If the position or place of the digit changes, its value also changes.  To be able to tell the value of a given digit in a number a place value table or chart is used.

Example
The example below represents 145,673,289.

The place value of each digit is written above the digit while the value of each digit is written below it.From the chart above, the place value of 4 is ten million.
The value of 4 is 40 000 000 (forty million).
Now let’s identify the value and the place value of the underlined digits.
Example: Write the value and place value of the underlined digit in the numbers below.
