Lesson 2 – Number Of Digits In A Given Number

Objectives:

At the end of this unit, students should be able to:

  • Read and write numbers in figures up to 99999.
  • Know the number of digits in a given number.

In this lesson we will find out the number of digits a given number should have.

NOTE:
A given number should have the following number of digits;

  • A Unit / One number has……………..1 digit.
  • A number in the Tens has…………….2 digits.
  • A number in the Hundreds has…….3 digits.
  • A number in the Thousands has……4 digits.
  • A number in the Tens of Thousands has…………………5 digits.
  • A number in the Hundreds of Thousands has…………6 digits

A number in the thousands should have four (4) digits. Examples are 3739, 3008, 2130, etc.
A number in the hundreds should have three (3) digits. Examples are 301,500,279,102, etc.
A number in the tens of thousands should have five (5) digits. Examples are 35142, 10120, 11029, 83103, etc.
