Lesson 2 – Number Of Digits In A Given Number

Objective:

At the end of this unit, students should be able to;

  • Know the number of digits a given number or numeral should have.

In this lesson we will learn how to know the number of digits a particular number should have.

NOTE:
A given number should have the following number of digits;

A number in the thousands has four (4) digits. Examples are 7,483,    9,004,   9,130, etc.

A number in the tens of thousands should have five (5) digits. Examples are 93,514,    74,820,    94,703,    63,942, etc.

A number in the hundreds of thousands should have six (6) digits. Examples are 123,456,    453,049,    739,810,    690,285, etc.

A number in the millions should have seven (7) digits. Examples are 4092731, 3,189,460,    7,501,639, etc.

Example 1

Write the number of digits in Three hundred and twenty-one thousand and four.

Solution

Three hundred and twenty-one thousand and four has 6 digits.

Example 2

Write the number of digits in Two million four hundred and fifty-five thousand two hundred and eighty-one.

Solution

Two million four hundred and fifty-five thousand two hundred and eighty-one has 7 digits. The reason is that a number in the millions should have 7 digits.

Example 3

Write the number of digits in Five million and nine.

Solution

Five million and nine has 7 digits.
