LESSON 15 – SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS FROM WHOLE NUMBERS

Objective:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to subtract fractions from whole numbers.

NOTE:

  • When subtracting a fraction from a whole number, you simply look at the fraction; paying close attention to its denominator.

  • The denominator tells how many parts of the fraction are in one whole.

  • We can then apply this knowledge to other whole numbers.

For instance, one quarter is written as 1/4 . The denominator is ‘4’ therefore there are four quarters in one whole. Hence, one whole can be written as 4/4 . If there are four quarters in one whole, two wholes will contain eight quarters and can be written as 8/4 .
