Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, students should know what fractional parts are and be able to find fractions of whole numbers or quantities.
NOTE:
The fractional part of a whole number or quantity involves finding the number or quantity that makes up that fraction of the whole number or quantity. It involves multiplying fractions and whole numbers.
Example 1
1/2 of 10 apples
We know that half of 10 apples is 5 apples as shown below.
When finding fractional parts, we simply divide the whole number by the denominator of the given fraction:
I.e. 1/2 of 10 apples also mean 1/2 x 10 apples
10 ÷ 2 = 5
The next step is to multiply the result by the numerator.
I.e. 5 x 1 = 5
Hence, 1/2 of 10 apples is 5 apples.
Example 2
What 3/4 is of 20?
3/4 of 20= 3/4 X 20/1 This means dividing 20 by 4 and multiply your results by 3.
20 ÷ 4 = 5 that is 20÷4=5, Multiply 5 by 3
5 X 3 = 15
Hence 3/4 of 20 is 15.
Example 3
2/5 of 30 =2/5 X 30/1 This means dividing 30 by 5 and multiply your result by 2.
30 ÷ 5 = 6
6 X 2 = 12
Hence 2/5of 30 = 12.
