Objective:
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to round whole numbers to their nearest ten.
Example 1
Round 265 to the nearest ten.
Solution
265 can also rounded to the nearest ten.
265 is between 260 and 270.
The units are 5 and we can round up to get 270.
Also, 265 is closer to 270 than it is to 260.
→ 265 to the nearest ten is 270
Example 2
Round 51,739 to the nearest ten.
Solution
The number to the right of the named place value is 9. Therefore, we round up by adding 1 to the 3 and replacing the remaining digit which is 9 with 0. 51,739 is between 51,730 and 51,740, but it is nearer to 51,740 than to 51,730.
51,739 to the nearest ten = 51,740.
NOTE
When rounding to the nearest 10, remember that half of 10 is 5. If the digit in the unit place is less than 5, the number rounds down to the previous 10. If the digit in the unit place is more than 5, the number rounds up to the next 10.
